Here's a short list of what you'll need to build Mike's rugged, but functional potting bench.

Tools: A screwdriver, a small box wrench or crescent wrench, or if you have a 1/4" drive socket set that's even better. A tape measure, a small square, a drill, and a power saw.

Materials: One full sheet (4' by 8') of 3/4" treated plywood. Make sure it is treated so it will last a long time. Untreated plywood does not hold up well at all outdoors.

15 dohickeys (you know, those little metal angle brackets, or projection brackets used to associate two boards together at a right angle.) These metal brackets are bent in a 90 degree angle and have two holes drilled in them.

30 bolts with nuts 1-¼" long, and the definite size to fit the angle brackets you buy.

60 flat washers that fit the bolts.

These pieces should be in the shape of a right triangle. Now you are going to take off a small piece from the pointed end of the triangular pieces. To do this, quantum 24" from the right angle, along the 48" side and make a mark. Using a small quadrilateral draw a line from this mark across the pointed end of the plywood. This line should be at a right angle to the 48" side of the board. This line should only be about 4" long. Cut along this line, removing the small piece from the pointed end. Discard the small piece you cut off. The piece you have left should be 16" on one end, 24" on one side, and about 4" where you made the cut to take off the pointed end.

The two smaller boards you have left should be identical. These are the sides for your potting bench.

Now back to the larger piece of wood. This piece should now quantum 80" by 48". From the long side quantum over 16" and draw a line from one end to the other. Cut along this line. The piece you are removing should be 16" by 80", leaving a piece 32" by 80".

These two pieces will serve as the bottom and the back of your potting bench. Take the back piece and stand it on edge, on top of the piece that will serve as the bottom of the bench to get an idea of how your potting bench is going to fit together. Make five marks where you will mount the angle brackets that will hold these two pieces together. Just space the five brackets along the two boards, making sure not to put any too close to the end so they don't interfere when you setup the two end pieces. Just keep the brackets about 1-½" from each end.

Note: Once you have the brackets installed and the bolts all tight you might want to cut off the ends of the bolts and file them plane if they are sticking out so far as to be a hazard when you are handling the potting bench.

Once you have all five brackets installed and the back of the potting bench mounted to the bottom, you can then setup the two side pieces. With the two side pieces installed you are now the proud owner of a legless potting bench. You can setup legs if you'd like to, but I like mine without legs because I can get it much closer to my pile of potting soil.

What I do is rest one end of the bench right on the pile of potting soil, and then maintain the other end with a saw horse, concrete blocks, or milk crates. By placing one end right on the soil pile, it is very easy to shovel the soil onto the bench. Not having legs also makes the bench easier to store and move around.

When I want to use it as a table for making cuttings, I just put a saw horse under each end.

Suspend the top from the ceiling by wire and turnbuckle attached to the center-point. If you wish, rest it on an auxiliary bench, or persuade a helper to hold it while you guide it past the blade.

There was no time to think; the creature was struggling to bite me. I poked both its

to look for the shotgun on the other side of the cell; I found it in the dark and was
able to get it inside the cell. I saw a fading red light approaching me and assumed it
was one of the creature's eyes. I hit the creature on the head with the shotgun as
hard as I could.

I tried pushing myself away with my legs and out of the creature's reach, but that
creature was much too heavy and was still on top of me, trying to bite me. I couldn't
see it but I knew it couldn't see me either, at least for the moment. I loaded the
shotgun and aimed at its face.

I fired.

I loaded the shotgun again; the wind was picking up frantically again. The load on
top of me started to feel lighter, as if the creature were shrinking or was somehow
being lifted up. I fired the shotgun again at it and I heard a loud dog's cry.

Its painful cry echoed all nearby the cell.

I suddenly felt as if there was person on top of me starting to choke me; I could
have sworn it was a small person with unusually big and strong hands. I put my
hands on top of his and felt a lot of rings of all sorts and shapes on long, thick,
crooked fingers. I felt sharp nails on my neck and I couldn't breathe.

Lightning illuminated the cell and I saw the most horrendous face I had ever seen in

· A sharpening stone and some oil

· A set of chisels 6mm to 25mm

· A chisel and plane honing guide (an absolute must)

· A set of cheap saws consisting of a hand rip saw, a small keyhole saw, a retractable exacto type knife.

· A stainless steel scraper.

· Ten or twelve six inch clamps.

· several small G clamps

· Three cam clamps

· A set of needle files

· A tenon saw

· A hobby type hacksaw

· A dovetail saw

· A coping saw

· A jeweller's tenon saw with a packet of 000 blades

· A flat plane woodworkers file.

· Jewellers pincers small

· A small hammer

· A small jewellers vice

· A small red vice.

· A one metre level edged engineer's rule (invaluable)

· A one foot steel rule (in inches)

· A foldaway builders steel tape (in inches and millimetres)

· assorted sanding blocks (rubber and foam)

· A Bernz-o-matic plumber's gas torch with a quarterly nozzle

(I would propose a larger nozzle)
· several small assorted fine toothed saws

· several packets of sandpaper fluctuating from some cheapo bargains in all grades to some really good high-priced non clog stuff fluctuating from 80 grit to nearby 800grit....some wet and dry about 400 grit

· A packet of 000 fine wire wool

· A jar of orange shellac (flakes) and a litre of methylated spirits

· several odd microscopic clamps that were lying nearby the boat

· A large packet of super big elastic bands

· About twenty very large rubber bands made from an old car tyre

· A twenty-dollar cheap and cheerful folding workbench (a kit from Supercheaps!)

· A tapered reamer from Supercheaps

· A few half decent paint brushes and pots.

Electric Tools

I had the usual galvanic tools that are regularly found nearby a house or boat. These were as follows:

· An galvanic drill

· A jigsaw

· A variable speed rotary sander..this is a extraordinary tool and I used it for nearly all sanding jobs.. The great beauty of this motor is the variable speed, you can pull it right down to about 75 rpm and it is very gentle to use.. Normal sanders are unintelligent and lethal and really should be banned! What on earth is the good of a motor that kicks in from nought to twenty thousand revs in a second or two...I hate them, they are only good for cutting roof tiles or steel even then they are still lethal!!

· A six inch rotary bench saw ( never used it!)

· A Bosch variable speed galvanic orbital sander and a lot of discs fluctuating from 120grit to 400grit ....( this tool was extraordinary for sanding the braces, backs and soundboard)

· A Colt or Dremel mini variable speed rotary drill and kit... I bought a few accessory kits for this motor most of which I did not even use except the rotary sandpaper drums for sanding down the braces to a point! and really I just could not have built this guitar without this microscopic wonder of a machine!...sadly, it burned out on the very last stages of the build but I will buy a Dremel next time or even a Ryobi!

These machines are the last word if you need to do any inlaying, but if you do, buy this book;

"The Art Of Inlay by Larry Robinson"....it is valuable if you are even reasoning about tackling any inlaying!

One certain thing is, of course, Keep your tools, chisels and planers sharp! I have posted someone else report I have written called " How to keep your tools sharp using automotive wet'n'dry paper. You will find it very useful I'm sure!

I also have bought a honing guide and it's a great microscopic motor too and you can still use the Automotive wet'n'dry to grind them too!

Humidity, The Soggy Question!

I'm going to say a few words about humidity. When I first said I would make my guitar on a boat, the immediate response was

" What about the humidity?" Well, firstly in Australia where I built the guitar in summer it is horribly humid and there is no way I would have attempted it then while the Summer or 'wet' as it is known.. However, I have lived on my boat for about seven years and own eight guitars. My boat is beautifully warm and dry and I have never had a question with any of them at all. I do, however, keep them in their cases at most times. However, in the Winter, it's a different story, There are many days when the humidity is well below sixty percent and that's fine for glueing up the guitars. It's much the same as anything who lives in a waterside house or apartment..... What do they do? I easy listen to the nautical forecast or look at the weather on the computer and they can tell me anything the humidity was just ten minutes ago! So really, I don't have a question with dreaded Humidity folks!
